Republican Health Care Plan Singles out Middle Class Workers
Congressional Republicans released their “American Health Care Act” (AHCA) quickly
known as “Trump Care” this past Monday evening. The AHCA repeals all of the other
taxes that were included in the Affordable Health Care Act but keeps the 40 percent excise tax, also known as the “Cadillac tax,” in place on high-quality health care plans, such as the National Health and Welfare Plan negotiated by the BLET. This inclusion potentially could hurt hard working railroaders who have fought for these benefits. Corporations, device manufacturers and the wealthy get a tax cut under the current guidelines of the AHCA, but middle class workers may be penalized.
The message from this Administration and the Republicans in Congress is very clear.
Once again, despite campaign promises to strengthen the middle class, the American
worker is given the burden of taxation while insurers, corporations and the wealthy receive immediate tax relief.
As the BLET membership is directly affected by this proposed legislation, all members and their families are asked to call their Representatives and request their support of a proposal to the American Health Care Act that repeals the “Cadillac Tax” entirely.
Members can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121, and ask to speak with the House of Representative member from your Congressional District. Contact information can also be found online here (http://www.house.gov/htbin/findrep). If you do not talk directly with your member of Congress, then ask to speak to the staff member who handles Labor issues. When speaking to staff, please be respectful just as you would if you were personally speaking with your member of Congress. A list of talking points and contact information for committee members is available here:
